Ancient and Medieval Philosophy Friday

Friday's class was focused on Augustine. I made two videos during the class and they are posted here and here. We also watched some of the movie Saint Augustine. The first quiz question was what is Jesus' middle initial! This is a silly question but it amazes me the answer everyone gives. Even Mark Twain wrote about it. Curious why. The second quiz question was what is the alure of the monastic life?

  1. 1. Jesus Christ Had no Middle name, In that time names first were given and then son or daughter then the sir name of the father. For example Jesus name from the Greek translation is Joshua ben/(son of) Joseph. the Hebrew version is Yehoshua bar/(son of) Yosef. The Greek translation of the New testament Yehoshua as Iesous is translated into English is Jesus. How ever the term Jesus H Christ is a swear world used to convey contempt or frustration and anger and not in a good manner trying to be polite and expressive about the activity or out right stupidity that brought on the use of the expression J.H.C. in the first place in lieu of other more colorful colloquialisms'.

2.The monastic life at last in old times meant you could be educated, fed on a regular basis and have some form security from the out side word. It was also a path to power, control and wealth in the name of God over others for those whom sought such pursuits. but for most it was better than being a surf under the command of a fiefdom under absolutist rule over the masses.
