Ancient and Medieval Philosophy lecture 7 and 8
This evening we discussed the Republic and the video is posted here. The quiz question was why do we have twelve months? The second portion of the evening was on several dialogs listed in the syllabus but I forgot to get the camera and turn it back on. So no second half video. But we discussed the Paramenides, Theatetus, and Timaeus. The quiz question was what do you think of the allegory of the cave?

1. There are 12 months in the year to match the seasons as well a 12 lunar cycles, hence the need for 12 months according to Julius Cesar's argument since at that time only 10 months were recognized. How ever many cultures had various forms of recording the passage of the days, months and years most fallowed royal edicts or observation of the lunar

2. "The allegory of the cave"
The story is about public reaction to a story they cannot believe which in turn causes them to not believe the truth which intern causes them to turn on the teller of the story for going against unchanged accepted tradition weather it be the law of the land or a religious edict. As for the prisoners in the cave there is no way they could not know about the out side world or the sun unless they were born in the cave and never let out to see the sun.
